Copper Valley Infant and Nursery Academy   October 2024

Posted 15/11/2024
by Sarah Evans

October has been another busy month in Y2.

In maths we have been learning how to add and subtract ones, tens and two digit numbers. We are also learning about number bonds on a weekly basis as this forms the foundation for all of our number work. We are making sure we know them off by heart.

Literacy was all about the traditional story, 'The Lion and the Mouse'. We had fun getting to know the story really well and looking at the sentence structures in the story before changing the story slightly to include our own ideas.
We are very imaginative in Y2!

In art we sorted colours of paper and selected the correct colours to represent flames. We used this to make a background for our Great Fire of London collages. Then we looked carefully at Tudor houses and their features before arranging black strips of card onto our backgrounds to make Tudor houses.

In computing, we have been learning to use a drawing programme. We can now select different colours, different sized brushes and draw shapes and fill them. Have a look at our wonderful creations!

Science has been fun this month learning about materials. We learnt about the properties of different materials and how they are used. Then we used what we learnt to undertake a bridge building challenge. We were able to talk about what worked, what didn't and why.
We have also had fun investigating which materials are waterproof. We then used what we found out to design a waterproof coat.

Just before half term we really enjoyed a visit from the fire brigade who were able to tell us how they fight fires now so that we could compare it to how they fought fires in The Great Fire of London.

TALLAND'S CLASS BLOG 15.11.24

Hello and goodbye Autumn Term two, week two! Blink and you miss it!

There's been loads going on this week: Anti bullying week, check; book fair, check; Mufti, check; cross country, check; loads of learning, check!

Maths:
Both year groups are coming to the end of their first unit of Multiplication and Division.

English:
Talland have completed their own adventure story. Next week, they will be assessing their writing success and then moving on to our next piece of writing (PERSUASION). Just in time for those letters to Santa.

Science:
The children are experimenting with sound this term and today went on a sound hunt to find out which materials vibrate to produce sound waves.

Talland were excited to find out our new Enquiry Question: What did the Greeks do for us? We've dived straight into researching the Greek Gods and Goddesses - SO MUCH FUN! This turned out to be similar with our RE question, where we looked into Hindu deities.

The class trip was also revealed - DRUM ROLL PLEASE - we are heading to The Eden Project where we will be known as the 'Greek Edenauts' and we must defend our village (the Mediterranean  Biome) against those menacingly ferocious Spartans. And as it's Christmas, we have also managed to get a spot of Ice Skating in there too... YAY!

The date of the trip: Friday 13th December... more details to come shortly...

WELL DONE to Chilali, Grace and Lily for being noticed as our children of the week. Also, CONGRADULATIONS to Grace for passing her 44 club and Jamie for passing his 88 club.

Polite notice:
Could all children please make sure they are coming to school with their complete PE kit including safe and suitable footwear. Thank you.

That's all from Talland this week. We hope you all have a spectacular weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Miss. Colton.

Another Busy Week

What a lot we've had on this week!

We started the week with our Remembrance service which took place on the playground. The children were so respectful and displayed the poppy wreath that they had made.
On Tuesday we all wore odd socks to school to show our support for national anti bullying week. We shared stories about respecting our similarities and differences.
On Wednesday we had a wonderful time joining with some other local schools to take part in 'The Princess and the Pea' singing workshop. Tregantle Class were so enthusiastic at singing the songs - they really did us proud!
On Thursday we became wonderful writers. It is so amazing to see our EYFS children start to put all of their phonics learning together and write simple words by themselves. Our Year 1 children have impressed us all with their writing about our new focus story 'Hansel and Gretel.' After school, lots of children attended the 'escape room' maths games event for national maths week which was so much fun!
We ended the week on Friday by dressing in blue to show that Brunel are against bullying. We learnt about what bullying is and what we should do if it happens to us or our friends. What a fantastic week!

The children looked fabulous in their blue for anti-bullying week today!  They've enjoyed lots of activities during the week.  The theme this year was 'Choose Respect' so we've been working on respect all week.

In English we have been learning about our story 'Hansel and Gretel' and finding out that it has a 'defeating a monster' theme... we also read some other books with the same theme - The Mousehole Cat, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs - Perhaps you could ask your child what these books all had in common?

It has also been Math's week so on Tuesday we played lots of Math's games and the Year 2's on Friday had a Maths Challenge to solve - it was very tricky so we may have to go back to it!

This week in science we were investigating which materials are waterproof - we were helping 'Incy Wincy Spider' to stop him being washed out of the spout!

Friday 15th November 2024

This week we have done so many wonderful things. Beginning with Remembrance on Monday and anti-bullying week beginning. The children have enjoyed thinking more about what respect is and how we show it, and why it is important to choose respect. They had a lovely time thinking of ways to be kind on World Kindness Day on Wednesday creating some lovely compliment charts.
On Thursday we had a lovely trip to Helston museum of Cornish life where we were able to experience what life may have been like for evacuees arriving in Helston. The children enjoyed the opportunity to handle artefacts, read newspapers from the time and write evacuation postcards home with a 'dippy ink pen'. The week has ended with Children in Need and a lovely day of art as we have helped Sean Hewitt to create a masterpiece for school and took part in a local competition. Lots of excited children hoping to win in the class.
A reminder that a letter has gone home as we open up our classroom to grandparents on Wednesday 11th December - with thanks to our kitchen staff in supporting this afternoon by helping us to do some baking, we cannot wait to welcome our important people and share our learning with them.

Next week is Parent's evening, please email or catch me to book your slot.

This was our last week of exploring colour and answering our enquiry question of " How does colour make us feel?"
The children have been busy sorting colours on the funky fingers table into the different coloured colour monster cups and sorting coloured objects on the tuft tray.
We enjoyed going onto the field this week and into the school garden where we went on a colour hunt, looking for different coloured items to match our list. The children did well and enjoyed looking at all of the different colours on the leaves.
Today (Friday) it has been Children in Need. The children looked great, dressed in their pyjamas, spots and bright coloured clothes and thank you for your kind donations. We enjoyed cooking and made blueberry muffins, the children coloured in Pudsey pictures and we made pudsey ear headbands.

This week at story time we have enjoyed  continuing to read "The colour monster" story and we have also explored the books "Elmer's colours" and "When i'm feeling happy", giving the children lots of opportunities to discuss their own feelings.

In phonics this week, we have been using our mouths and our voices to create different sounds, using everyday objects such as pots and pans to create different sounds and we have enjoyed games of "I spy" to help recognise the initial sounds in different words.

In maths we have been continuing to recognise and order numbers and the children have been experimenting with their own symbols and marks to represent numbers.

Have a great weekend
The nursery team

Come along for a cuppa, a catch up with other parents, and find out how we support and can further support your children’s well-being together.

Footballing Success
Earlier this week, our amazing boys’ football team had their first outing and took part in the ESFA qualifier. They played four games, winning three and drawing one. The whole team were AMAZING and put on a real show! They were excellent together and were especially good with their communication, hard work, dedication and not giving up. This took them all the way to the semi-finals where they won and qualified for the finals!

Friday 15th November

Some of this week’s exploring and learning:

We started the week with Remembrance Day, The children explore what Remembrance day is. We explored information that told us why was wear poppies and why we observe a silence. The children observed a one minute silence in class at 11am and then we discussed how we felt and what we thought about it. The children were amazing at understanding this thoughtful day. All of our activities were based on Remembrance Day and the children created some wonderful work.

The children have been working so hard in phonics this week. Its really important that the children can hold their pencil with a strong grip and that they are able to form their letters correctly. Therefore, we have continued to practice our letter formation this week and the children have been writing letters i/n/m and d/.

In maths this week the children have been linking number symbols with the cardinal value. We have explored this through lots of fun activities and the children keep heling miss Hughes to problem solve when she finds it a bit tricky!!

On Thursday we had our disco and it was so much fun, it was great to see the children attend after school in their disco clothes and dance away. The adults had great fun too!

Today Mr Hewitt came to school and introduced our special artwork that the whole school will be taking part in. The children then had a very important job of colouring their own named fish to be a part of this wonderful artwork. This artwork will be displayed in our school hall, pictures to follow on completion.

Today was also Children in Need Day and we explored this using stories and pictures so that the children have a great understanding of what this day means. All of our activities today were based on Children in Need.

Its been a very busy week and I’m sure the children are very tired so we wish you all a lovely, relaxed weekend.

The Foundation Team

Friday 15th November

Well what another jam packed week we have had.  The children have worked so hard even through all of the sniffles, sore throats and coughs!

We started this week by discussing Remembrance and how important it is to remember what people have done in the past to help us today.  The children have completed lots of activities during their rainbow challenges this week, linked to Remembrance day.

Maths
In maths this week our Reception children have been exploring shapes, particularly focusing on circles and triangles.  They have been looking at the properties of each shape, learning the vocabulary to describe them and making pictures using them.  Year 1 and 2 have been continuing their learning in addition and subtraction.  Year 1's have spent time exploring fact families and Year 2's have been finding 10 more and 10 less using number lines, hundred squares and also mentally.

English
This week in Drawing Club, Reception have been using their imaginations to create some amazing work.  Year 1 and 2 have been writing some amazing sentences based on the story of Binny's Diwali.  There has been some great adjectives, use of speech marks and beautiful handwriting.

PE
This week we have had our second session of gymnastics which the children are getting stuck right into.  They are all able to move in lots of different ways and are beginning to create some basic gymnastic shapes with control.

PSHE
In our PSHE work this half term we are 'Celebrating difference'.  So far we have discussed the things we like to do and how these might differ from our friends and also the similarities and differences we have.

Reading buddies
On Thursday afternoon we came together with Tregeagle class to have some reading time with our reading buddies.  It was really lovely to see everyone engaged in a whole host of different texts.

We are looking forward to another fabulous week next week.  If you have any questions then please ask.

Have a great weekend.

The Nursery children have finished their half term learning based around their focus story Owl Babies.

They have been busy drawing, painting and creating their own owls with various medium and have enjoyed sharing the story with each other.

We have seen them retelling the story to their friends, and acting out parts of the story, too.

We've learnt that a baby owl is called an owlet, and that a group of owls is called a parliament.

Diwali and Remembrance Day

We have had a brilliant week of learning in Foundation / Year 1.

On Monday, we learnt all about Remembrance Day and what it means. We talked about the importance of the poppy and how it is an important symbol to remember those that have fought for us. We made our own poppies in different ways and made a poppy wreath to display in our classroom.

We also had a day focused on Diwali this week. We discussed how it is ‘the festival of lights’ and different ways it is celebrated. We explored Diwali through making Mendhi patterns, recreating Rangoli patterns with coloured rice and making Diva lamps. The children worked really hard on creating beautiful artwork.

Year 1 have started their Science unit all about animals. We have been exploring this through grouping animals into fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. We are learning a song to help us remember the animal classifications!

Next week, we will also start rehearsals for our Christmas Play! There will be more information about this soon but we will start learning the songs in class. Foundation have already began practising their songs for their Christmas performance. I have no doubt the children will be amazing.

Parent Partnership meetings are taking place next week. These will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you haven’t made an appointment yet the booking are available on the window at drop off.

Thank you!

This month we have been learning more about materials and been testing their properties. We loved seeing what would float and sink and which materials would soak up liquids.
In art we completed our final drawing of our 'Wild Things' after trying out lots of ideas in our sketch books.
We completed our learning for our Big Question of 'Where on Earth are we?' We found our school and our homes on an aerial photograph and traced the flow of the local river. On World Mental Health Day we dressed in yellow and took part in activities that can support keeping our minds healthy such as yoga.
We finished the half term with a lovely Forest School session where the children lit fires and had some yummy hot chocolate.

We've had a fantastic start to Autumn Term 2 starting our new topics with lots of enthusiasm!

Geography -
We've started our journey to Europe discussing the continents of the world and how countries (or states) make up continents. We've started to bring in photographs from our European holidays to add to our working wall, sharing our memories and discussing the climate and geographical features that we can see and how these are similar/different to England.

English -
Myths, legends and traditional tales have captured our imagination this week; discussing the impact that high quality vocabulary has on the reader.
A great start! Please find this term's KIRFS and Mind Map below.

Dates for your diaries:
Class Assembly - Friday 29th November @9am

All things Christmas - Saturday 7th December, St Cleer Church.

Both Year 3/4 classes have been asked to decorate a Christmas tree as part of the celebrations. We'll be taking it up to the church on Friday 6th December.

Dear all

I hope that you have had a lovely half term week and have enjoyed some fireworks!!

We have been incredibly busy in school for this last week!  Last week, we had an amazing re-enactment of the Crimean War battle and the children had lots of fun!  Firstly, they went onto the playground and did the battle and then the amazing nurses helped the injured into the hall where they were treated for all of their injuries!  The children learned many things from this experience and talked about it endlessly!

This week is Anti-Bullying week and also on Wednesday is world kindness day.  The children will be completing some activities during our PSHE lessons to understand how important these two areas are!

In maths, we are still on addition and subtraction.  There are many assignments on Mathletics for the children to complete so please feel free to do this at home.  Also, there are not many entries in children's Reading logs at the moment so please make sure you write in them to enable your child's book to be changed weekly.  If there is no evidence of reading at home then unfortunately the book will not be changed!  Also, your child needs to read the phonics minibooks weekly too - please do not forget to return them.

The children are learning about continents in geography at the moment and are producing some amazing work!  They will show off their work at the parents consultations in a few weeks time.
